“…ever since the beginning, just to keep the world spinning, it takes all kinds of kinds.” -Don Henry
OK. Let me see how I can connect these dots for you without turning your Sunday morning into a bunch of scribbles.
1. Don Henry is an amazing song writer, and a friend of ours. He writes really lovely, thoughtful songs that are also honest and a bit quirky in the most delightful way. His song “all kinds of kinds” has been a favorite of Brandon’s for years. You can see him play it live (with our friend Sally Barris to boot!) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaAkmI9rkYU. Don’s been up from Nashville a few times to play with Brandon at various gigs, including the Americana Showcase. If you have the chance to see him live, go! You can check him out at: www.donhenry.com
2. Have you ever heard of spotify? If you haven’t just go to www.spotify.com and you’ll figure it out. It’s a music lovers oasis. I’ve been pretty obsessed with it, listening to all kinds of fun music, for FREE! And Spotify is BETTER than Pandora, because you can CHOOSE what you want to listen to, ANYTHING, for FREE! Make a playlist of fun songs from the 70’s, or punk rock, or college rock, or every single Rolling Stones song you can think of. You get the picture…. Well the other day, I hear an ad (the one drawback of free music), for Miranda Lambert’s new tour, and I hear this voice that is NOT Don Henry singing “…ever since the beginning, just to keep the world spinning…” So Miranda Lambert has recorded our friend Don Henry’s song. We just put these dots together, and now you’re a music insider too! Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtDamABFYlI
3. So what’s the big deal? Our friend Don Henry just had one of his songs recorded by a huge country star. It’s the next best thing for musicians who like singing their own songs, to getting famous, to have someone famous sing their song. But for devoted singer/songwriters, having someone record your song isn’t only a really great compliment, it brings home the bacon. And Don Henry is an awesome guy, and deserves a little bacon. Or if he’s a vegetarian, which he very well might be, I don’t remember, he deserves the fakin’ bacon, or tempeh bacon, or maybe just a big stack of green.
4. And just to tie this all into a pretty little Sunday morning package, the song is about tolerance, and compassion, and acceptance; especially for those that we encounter in life who are unusual, different, quirky, confusing, eccentric. Have you ever felt like the odd duck? The last one picked for kick ball? The weird one? The skinny one? The one that was too smart? Or wore too much black in high school? The lonely one? The jester? The one who smiled and looked good even with secrets in your heart? Who hasn’t felt that way? Let’s not fool ourselves into dividing the world between the “us” and the “thems.” We are in this together my friends, and there is room for all of us, there is enough for all of us, and we are all meant to be here, together, in this circus of life, as clowns and acrobats; ringleaders and cheerleaders and spectators and lion tamers. So let’s smile and look each other in the eye every once in a while. Om. Amen. Hallelujah.
If they’d look in the mirror they’d find.
That ever since the beginning to keep the world spinning
It takes all kinds of kinds.
All kinds of kinds.
All kinds of kinds.”
